]]> In a recent blog post, I wrote about waiting to release our video of Les Twins and Les Ballerinas until we get the go ahead from the BIG company with whom the Twins have deal.   Alas, we have been delayed a second time while the BIG company completes what they are working on.  On the surface this is disappointing, but I have learned to look at “problems” as opportunities to make things better.  That may sound cliche, but limitations really do challenge you to think more deeply about what you are doing and to find the essence of it.   Some of my favorite limitations, familiar to so many filmmakers, are: the sun is going down, the music is unavailable, the costume reflects green, the dancer is cramping, the shoes are torn, the jib is broken, I’m out of ideas (panic), and the all time winners – we’re out of money and we’re out of time.  So now, Mr. Big has given us MORE time.   Yep, we’re using it.  It’s an opportunity to polish, experiment and push the creativity of our edit.   When we finally release this video sometime in August, I promise to explain what we did with the extra time.  In the meantime, wishing all of you the best of luck with your own  “opportunities”.

]]> We are really looking forward to releasing our Les Twins and Les Ballerinas in “Ants” video.  Needless to say, we aren’t the only lucky people working with Les Twins, and as can happen with famous people, sometimes BIG companies like to make agreements with them.  So we are in a bit of a holding pattern waiting for a BIG company to say they are ready to have our video out there.  This is contrary to almost all of the thinking these days about building a fan base and growing an audience for artists.  More publicity is better for everyone, and more cool content creates more word of mouth, which builds bigger audiences, who want to watch more content.   But, we are still a small company, so we are patiently waiting for the BIG company to do their thing, and hopefully you will get to see our video in the next week or two.  I’m pretty sure our video is worth the wait, and we’re working  on some bonus video to say thanks for YOUR patience.

]]> Our experiment for our First Annual Night at the Fountain, worked!   The live music of Adam Theis and the Shotgun Wedding Quartet, the food of Charles Phan, and the location at the new SFJazz Center with its two walls of windows that invite passers by to watch would have been great enough.  But we added some special sauce with three sets of live dancers who each took the floor for a song – Brian Gibbs and Alex Jenkins doing modern dance, Miles and NayTron breakdancing, and Joe Orrach tapping.  AND we showed our films Lion – Night and Day and the premier of Les Twins and Les Ballerinas on a big screen.  Dancing, music, dance films – yep, it was a perfect Night at the Fountain.  And yes, we did have bourbon, and that might have helped too…

]]> We are releasing LION – NIGHT AND DAY on Friday!  As I said in a recent post, I feel like this piece revealed itself to us, as if it knew all along what it wanted to be – two killer dancers (no pun intended), black and white, slow motion and full speed, slow and fast-ish music.  Though I didn’t really know where it was going, all these choices kept feeling right and natural as we went along – from choosing the dancers, then the set and lighting, then through the edit and in composing the final music – like round pegs sliding into round holes, it wanted to be Night and Day.

]]> Time for an update on our latest three videos.  ”Lion – Night and Day” is done!  It will premier April 26th at a Fountain 3 Films event and online.  Get ready to be stalked - dancers Garen Scribner and Sergio Benvindo (Bam Bam) are fierce.  The second rush of the week came from seeing the latest Les Twins edit, which is well under way.   Pairing Les Twins with the ballerinas, or I should say, those ballerinas – Sarah Van Patten and Doris Andre – is working out better than I could have imagined.   Finally, we got to shoot a promo piece for Alonzo King LINES Ballet last Friday with Michael Montgomery and Caroline Rocher.  They are both funny and fabulous in it  – a rather productive and exciting week for Fountain 3 Films!!!

]]> Editing!  We are buried editing the two pieces we have shot  in the last couple months –  the first is Black & White (working title) with Garen Scribner and Sergio Bevindo (aka Bam Bam), and the second is Les Twins.  Since we shot Les Twins on the Red Epic camera, there is a LOT of prep work going on to ready the footage for editing.  B&W is almost done, and as happens so often in editing, it seemed to reveal itself to us slowly, evolving into two pieces as opposite from each other as possible.  The first piece, called Lion, is slow, mostly black, ominous and natural.  The second is fast, white, upbeat and musical.  Our musician, Ben, has to create a sound “bridge”, making sense of the move from one to the next.  He claims he likes working with filmmakers because they ask him to do things that no musician would ever ask.  I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or not, but at least its a good example of what happens when different art forms collaborate.  Until then, we’re shaving the picture, frame by frame, honing it to create a flow and rhythm that hopefully makes it all look easy.
